At 7, Amy Elizondo started racing. By 13, she was licensed to drive her dad’s Camaro on road courses…When she graduated [from] ASA Racing’s speed-truck division at 16, she won the ProAutoSports Division Rookie of the Year award…She is half Hispanic and half American Indian, and is the first in her family to graduate from college or junior college….She’ll keep working toward her goal, with or without a sponsor, hoping to make it big.

She graduated from high school in the top five percent of her class, despite the fact that she was ditching classes on Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays regularly to race.

She also tested at Grandsport Speedway near Houston with a new Indy Racing League team entering IRL’s Indy Light series, a steppingstone to the Indy 500. ‘I’m waiting patiently,’ she said.” According to Lynn St. James, “You have to understand the business. You have obligations that come with driving a race car for a team and sponsor. It’s not about how much fun it is or how good you are. It’s about being prepared.

Amy Elizondo had to do more than just tell her father she wanted to race cars. She had to show that she meant it…’my sister would work on the cars with my father, and I would jump out of one car and go straight into the other. He wanted two boys, and he ended up with us.’…for the past 14 years, she’s kept proving that she wants to race, winning at various levels, starting with quarter midgets. She got her road-course license when she was 13…Her father, Manny, began racing motocross when he was 12 and also drove Outlaw late models…She took accelerated courses at Mesa Red Mountain High School and played violin in the orchestra…’I try to stay as smooth as possible,’ she said, ‘and use more of my brain than just my foot.

In her podium interview, Amy says ’this is what I want to do in my life, I want to be a professional race driver!’…A quarter midget racecar is a smaller version of the open wheel midget racecars that propel a lot of professional racers into Indy cars and NASCAR, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart started these careers in these cars at a similar age [to Amy Elizondo]…Amy finished her Quarter Midget career at age 13 in 2000 with a record number of wins and a wall of trophies that were often larger than she was. The ASA Speed Truck Series…is an excellent series for drivers looking towards the big time as the trucks are very similar to the NASCAR Craftsman Trucks with a V8 engine and full racing chassis.
